The Artist Behind the Alchemy
Herbal Alchemy is the life’s work of Joshua Magee, a Chicago-based artist and syrup maker transforming memory, hospitality, and imagination into flavor.
We craft small-batch botanical syrups for coffee, tea, cocktails, mocktails, and moments worth returning to.
Before it was a brand, it was a way of remembering.
Herbal Alchemy began with the understanding that flavor carries more than taste.
Joshua grew up in a home where food was both inheritance and invitation. Garlic blooming in a pan. Voices gathering around the table. The quiet anticipation before a room filled with laughter. These experiences taught him that food could communicate care, preserve history, and bring people closer.
As a trained artist and storyteller, Joshua spent years exploring memory through images, poetry, and narrative. Herbal Alchemy is where those creative languages meet the kitchen. Each syrup begins with a feeling, a remembered place, or a moment worth preserving, then takes shape through botanicals, layered flavor, and patient experimentation.

Most syrups begin with a flavor trend or a familiar ingredient. Herbal Alchemy begins with a question:

That question guides everything from the ingredients and flavor development to the artwork and stories surrounding each bottle. The result is syrup that does more than sweeten a drink. If Herbal Alchemy were a person, it would be Aisling.
Observant, curious, and attentive to the stories held in ordinary things, Aisling is the literary personification of Herbal Alchemy. She gives human form to the qualities at the heart of the brand: sensory awareness, emotional depth, craftsmanship, hospitality, and care for the memories carried through flavor.
Joshua Magee creates the syrups and writes Aisling. Through her journal and the fictional world of the Celestial Grove, each Signature flavor becomes part of a larger story exploring memory, change, beauty, and human connection.
You do not need to know the stories to enjoy the syrup. The syrup stands alone. The story invites you deeper.
